Mission Statement:
The members of the Greater Tidewater Chapter of the American Society of
Safety Engineers (ASSE) are committed to promote, enhance, and support the
safety professionals in our geographic area, and to support the overall
mission of ASSE.
Goals:
A. Chapter Programs
Provide quality meetings for the enhancement of professional networking,
technical knowledge, and overall professional growth.
2004-2007:

1. Conduct twelve meetings during each Chapter's
year; |
|
. |
|
2. Present a minimum of nine meetings on technical
subjects, directly or indirectly related to the safety and health
professional, and two social meetings each Chapter year; |
|
. |
|
3. Provide qualified speakers to lecture at the
meetings; |
|
. |
|
4. Conduct at least one joint meeting per Chapter
year with another section or Chapter; |
|
. |
|
5. Conduct at least one joint meeting per Chapter
year with another related Safety and Health organization; and |
|
. |
|
6. Conduct a pre-planning meeting of the Executive
Committee before the first meeting of the Chapter year. |
2005-2007:
|
1. Have at least one Chapter Program sponsored by a
Practice Specialty. |
2006-2007:
|
1. Conduct at least one joint meeting with the
Student section, or one meeting featuring students in the field of
Safety and Health. |
B. Awards, Honors, & Recognition
Recognize members and non-members for their achievements and contributions
to the Society, and/or the field of Safety and Health in our geographic
region.
2004-2007:

1. Recognize members for outstanding
service to the Society and/or the profession; |
|
|
. |
|
|
i. Recognition to include appropriate mentions in
the newsletter and at member meetings; |
|
|
. |
|
|
ii. As appropriate, send recognition to National
ASSE for inclusion in Society publications; |
|
. |
|
2. Nominate and select a Chapter Safety
Professional of the Year (SPY) each Chapter year; |
|
. |
|
3. Forward at least one SPY candidate
for consideration at the Regional Level; |
|
. |
|
4. Honor at least one non-Society member
for their service to the field of Safety and Health each Chapter
year; |
|
. |
|
5. Recognize Society Fellows, SPYs,
emeritus members, long-time service award winners, and other such
dignitaries at a member meeting each Chapter Year; and |

6. Obtain Chapter Stars recognition each
Chapter year. |
2005-2007:

1. Solicit nominations for at least one Chapter
Fellow petition |
C. Membership Recruitment & Retention
Recruit members to the Chapter, and in particular develop the student
membership, and develop and retain existing members of the Chapter.
2004-2007:

1. Survey members to determine their expectations of
the Chapter; |
|

|
2. Increase membership by 15% during the entire
long-range goal period; |
|
. |
|
3. Have the Hospitality Committee continue to
recognize and greet members at Chapter functions, as well as
introduce new members and guests; and |
|

|
4. Institute a program to contact members whose
membership has lapsed. |
2005-2007:

1. Conduct a new member orientation as a part of the
first Chapter meeting of the fiscal year; |
|

2. Increase opportunities to encourage student
participation in the Chapter; and |

3. Develop more involvement with Practice
Specialties within the Chapter. |

1. Re-survey members to determine their expectations
of the Chapter. |
D. Chapter Leadership
Create an environment to encourage the participation of members in Chapter
activities, and to foster productive leaders who help move the Chapter
forward to best serve our members.
2004-2007:

1. Develop a duty checklist for all
incoming officers and provide to them so that they fully
understand their charge; |
|
|
. |
|
|
i. Update this checklist every Chapter year. |
|
. |
|
2. Conduct at least 10 Executive Board
meetings every Chapter Year; |
|
. |
|
3. Send at least one person to the ASSE
Leadership Conference; |
|
. |
|
4. Establish unique, extraordinary, or
other innovative programs to enhance member service; |
|
. |
|
5. Provide assistance to National,
Regional, or Area activities; |
|

|
6. Host an ROC meeting in our geographic
area; and |
|
. |

7. Develop revenue generating programs
to help fund and encourage participation in Chapter activities; |

i. Recognize sponsors appropriately in the
newsletter, and Chapter meetings and functions; and |

8. Award the Chapter scholarship to a
deserving student; and |

9. Continue to support the Peninsula
section and plan at least two joint meetings per year to include
the Section. |
2005-2007:

1. Update this Long-Range Plan each Chapter year;

2. Develop common interest groups who report to the
Executive Committee each month. |

1. Host an ROC meeting in our geographic area. |
E. Professional Development Conferences
Provide an opportunity for members to network and learn more about the
safety and health, and develop programs that provide excellent training
opportunities at an affordable cost.
2004-2007:

1. Provide full-day conferences every year on topics
designated by the Executive Committee, based on input from Chapter
members; |
|
. |
|
2. Encourage vendor and sponsor participation in
PDCs; |
|
. |
|
3. Encourage Chapter members to serve on the Region
VI PDC committee; |
|
. |
|
4. Sponsor two liaisons to attend the Region VI PDC;
and |
|
. |
|
5. Sponsor at least one Delegate to attend the ASSE
National PDC. |
F. Communication
Maintain effective communication tools for Chapter leadership to
communicate with members, and to provide the local community with
information about the Society.
2004-2007:

1. Provide newsletters at least once per month,
including information about meetings, member activities, National
news, and technical information; |
|
. |
|
2. Maintain a website which has timely and accurate
information, including the monthly newsletters; |
|
. |
|
3. Provide employment information at monthly
meetings, in the newsletter, and on the website, as appropriate; |
|
. |
|
4. Maintain the Member Relations committee, to serve
Chapter members and to serve as a mechanism to publicize the
Chapter to the community, and provide monthly updates to the
Executive committee; |
|
. |
|
5. Maintain the Government Affairs Committee, and
provide material for the newsletter each month; |
|
. |
|
6. Invite at least one local political leader each
Chapter year to speak to the Chapter membership, as an opportunity
to update local Safety and Health professionals on government
affairs, and provide the members with the opportunity to speak
with their local leaders; and |
|
. |
|
7. Issue one roster per year to all Chapter members,
with an updated copy of the bylaws included in each year's roster. |
2005-2007:
|
1. Develop a "member benefits" brochure to
share with members to make them more aware of the various benefits
of membership in ASSE at the local and National level. |
G. Community Enhancement
Promote the Chapter, Society, and Safety and Health to the community as a
whole, and encourage Chapter participation in relevant causes within the
area.
2004-2007:

a. Promote the ASSE Foundation in the newsletter, at
member meetings, and on the website; |
|
. |
|
b. Sponsor at least one event or activity per
Chapter year to benefit the ASSE Foundation; |
|
. |
|
c. Donate, as appropriate, time and/or other
resources to at least one relevant community cause each Chapter
year; and |
|
. |
|
d. Promote activities involving ASSE in the local
media as appropriate. |
2005-2007:
|
1. Provide a Speakers' bureau of Chapter members to
groups such as community civic leagues and related organizations
to help promote the cause of safety and environmental health to
the community as a whole; and |
|
. |
|
2. Increase and enhance the Chapter
"library," by procuring instructional aids such as the
"Fatal Vision" kit (currently in the collection) for use
by Chapter members as appropriate. |
|
